San Gimigniano, Italy, mid afternoon.
The lunchtime rush is over. The chefs are joined by a waiter for a break. A cigarette or two is smoked, away from the eating area.
I came upon these three as I walked along a back alleyway running parallel to the main street, and continued up the steps on the right. None of them took any notice of me; they were all too busy puffing and unwinding after a busy stint in the restaurant.
I’m often struck by how many smokers there are in the catering business. They take the back or side door out of the restaurant’s kitchen to have a smoke. I guess it must be a stressful job at times, hence the need to have a fag and unwind.
I just hope they wash their hands before getting back to handling the food……!
