Red shouldered hawk

This beauty sat still and posed for an obligingly long time in a rough wild part of the Memphis arboretum, which we visited on our recent tour of the southern states.

The ruffled feathers, the keen eye and the strong yellow feet were all clearly visible, even though it was on a top branch and I was on the ground. I wasn’t sure of its ID, as I learn more about US birds on every visit, but I knew it was a hawk. Of some kind!

Spring was everywhere that day, bursting out attractively all over the arboretum, which is a very pleasant place to visit.
